Baba Yaga’s Stew with Trevor DewittWith Lucia Thomas on fiddle and banjo and Dianna Davis on piano and clarinet, Baba Yaga’s Stew draws from Eastern European Music and beyond. Trevor DeWitt is an experienced clogging dancer and instructor and will bring his unique talent to the stage.

Ryan Smith, our friend from Cincinnati, comes to Indy to bring his very special talents while he calls to the tunes of The Kitchen Sink. The Kitchen Sink is our very own MaryRose Minnich with Matt Willman and Chris Wood from Cincy. We will be delighted and entertained and of course, there will be much dancing.

Deadline for discount pricing and tee-shirts is October 11.Party of Three brings together three musicians from diverse musical backgrounds who share a depth of experience playing for dancing. Combining high energy Scottish and Cape Breton fiddle music with Latin and Funk influenced piano and drum grooves, Party of Three has been enthusiastically received by dancers across the mid-atlantic and northeast. Members include Lilly Pearlman on fiddle, Neil Pearlman on piano, mandolin and banjo, and Joe De Paolo on drums, doumbek and bodhran.

Mulberry Street, made up of Ben Hemmendinger (accordion), Perin Ellsworth-Heller (fiddle) and Kristen Planeaux (piano and percussion) play a mix of traditional, modern, and original compositions with a lush and richly textured sound. Fierce, soaring fiddle and pulsing accordion swing and harmonize around persuasive piano grooves, accented by driving foot percussion and hand drumming. We draw influences from many well-worn avenues (and some odd little alleys), mixing our love for what’s come before with our urge to explore and create.

Cis Hinkle has delighted contra and square dancers since 1985 with her skilled teaching, welcoming manner, playful enthusiasm, and masterful selection of dances.

Bradley Smith of Louisville brings his humor and interesting dances to delight and enchant us all.

Ken Gall brings his experienced teaching to the dance floor while Sunday Night Swing (Dianna Davis, Tobe Woodrough, Daryl Jones, and Bob Foster) bring their jazz flavored old-time and bluegrass music for an energetic evening of dance.

Electro Contra with DR Shadow and Vickie Stohl

Come rock your socks off with the amazing beat of electro contra, provided by our very own DR Shadow! Vickie Stohl brings her calm and lovely voice to lead the dancers into smooth deliciousness.

The Cosmic Otters (Meg Dedolph – guitar, percussion, Eric Schedler – accordion, piano, Jonathan Whitall – fiddle, piano) bring their “Driving, Irish and Scottish-flavored contra dance music: fiddly goodness, gutsy guitar, romping accordion” to Indy’s dance floor. Katie Zukof of Bloomington will help them create a magical Sunday afternoon of dance.

Troika (meaning “trio” in Russian) combines the diverse sounds of Ireland, Old Time America, Eastern and Southern Europe, the Cajun South and more for a truly eclectic dance experience. Judy Goldsmith will be calling for us.

Contra @ The State Fair

Free tickets to the state fair for members and local dancers who will come and dance from 8-10 PM at the State Fair. This is a great way to share the fun of contra while enjoying our great Indiana State Fair.

Joy Greenwolfe out of Durham, NC will be bringing her sense of artistry and clear teaching to Grove Haus while Thin Air provides the musical joy.
About Thin Air: “Dianna Davis brings her improvisational ensemble for the first time to Indy Contra. Thin Air creates music out of “thin air”. All four musicians, Dianna Davis, Pam Blevins Hinkle, Elizabeth Efroymson-Brooks, and Sally Childs-Helton are staples on the Indy music scene and will bring a great new sound to Indy Contra.”
Joy will be leading a beginner caller’s workshop before the dance starting at 6:30 PM at Grove Haus.

Band Sunday Night Swing with caller Georges Augustin   Dianna Davis on clarinet and accordion, Tobe Woodrough on fiddle, mandolin, and guitar, Daryl Jones on guitar, and Bob Foster on guitar. All four musicians play music together at the Sunday night gypsy jazz jam in Indy and play other styles of music including old time, bluegrass, and more so expect a lot of fast moving folk tunes from this quartet.
Georges is a contra friend from Chicago, and will delight us with his fun and interesting dances.

March 2016

March 2016 has 5 weekly Tuesday night contras and Beach Party on Sunday March 20th!  

March 1 features Emily Ann and Kelly Thompson, with Adam Nichols, after a basic waltz workshop that starts at 7 pm.

March 8 features visiting caller Gaye Fifer, and music by Convolution with Mario. Gaye leads an intermediate waltz workshop at 7 pm.

March 15 Keith Tuxhorn and the Laughing Lizards, old time band from Austin, Texas join us.

Sunday March 20 is Beach Party, an afternoon contra with music by Music by Ben Smith, Matt Turino, and Claire Johnson, with Michael Hamilton. Sunday contras are 2 – 5 p.m. This annual event always features theme costumes, prizes, and snacks (contributions welcome!).

March 22 features Atlanta contra, techno and square dance caller Deanna Palumbo, with music by Indy Ceili Band.

March 29 features Ben Smith, Kristen, and Vickie Stohl, with caller Bob Duffy.

Our next Sunday afternoon contra is May 22, with the Flying Polka Dots (Martha Edwards, Kelsey Wells, Kristen Planeaux, Donal Sheets).

Save the weekend of October 21 – 23 for Gypsy Moon Ball, with Party of Three, and Cis Hinkle caller.

Deb Shebish and Johnandrew Bellner, with Ken Gall
Deb performs traditional fiddle, folk, orchestral and chamber music, and is currently working on a documentary about Indiana’s fiddle traditions. Johnandrew is a recording engineer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and singer who performs in half a dozen Indy bands.

Ken’s calling tour this past fall included Berkeley CA, Colorado Springs, Toronto ON, and Rochester NY.

February 9
Troika with Nick Rockstroh
Nick, visiting from Louisville, KY, has been calling and writing dances for two years, He likes to experiment, always trying to make sure everyone can participate.

It’s Mardi Gras, so expect beads, masks, and donuts.

February 16
Elections and annual meeting – Electro Contra with Vicki Stohl
A brief annual members’ meeting at the break features an update on our organization’s activities, and election of new board members.

We welcome back Vickie, who’s been living in Durham, NC. Vickie previously served on Indy Contra’s board, ran sound, called, and played a variety of instruments.

Baba Yaga’s Stew with Frank Buschelmann
Lucia Thomas on the fiddle and banjo and Dianna Davis on piano, clarinet, and piano, Baba Yaga’s Stew draws from both musicians’ repetoire of Eastern European folk music and beyond.

Frank is a long time Cincinnati caller and organizer.

Join Indy Contra in its new workshop series on January 12 and 19 in the New Year! Workshops start at 7pm (sharp!) before the Tuesday night contra dance and is free.

Join Elizabeth as we play with ways to communicate personality, musicality, and ideas, in order to have an enjoyable experience with your partner and the entire dance hall.

You can come to one or both of the workshops – they will include different material at each one.

Elizabeth Quay is an experienced dance teacher with the swing dance and contra community and we are excited that she will be teaching at our first workshop series! It’s free and starts at 7pm on the dot. You need not have attended last week’s session to come.

January 31, Coffee Zombies and Darlene Underwood Sunday afternoon dance

Admission $10 (25 & up), $5 (15 – 24), or free (14 & under).
The Coffee Zombies have rocked dancers from California to the New York island, and from Austin to Wisconsin. Based in Louisville, KY, Tom Cunningham’s swing, old-time and bluegrass backgrounds influence his fiddle and guitar playing. Drawing on her passion for Roma gypsy, Celtic and Balkan dance music, Dianna Davis brings her keyboard, accordion, clarinet and foot percussion playing from Indianapolis, IN. Playing percussion and guitar, Louisvillian Bob Douglas infuses the band with years of experience in world beat, punk and prog rock. The Coffee Zombies’ sound incorporates original tunes based on rock, classical and folk styles, as well as traditional and modern dance tunes. Combined with their hard-driving rhythmic base, their sound makes everyone want to dance.

Darlene Underwood, a well-known caller not only in her home dance community of Cincinnati, but throughout the midwest and east coast, will be calling our afternoon of contras. You always know Darlene is in the room with her unlimited supply of energy and her fabulous spirit. As always, she will have a great program of dances to match the Coffee Zombies rockin tunes.
