Become a member

We always welcome memberships, which cost $15, and save $1 off each weekly dance, plus other discounts on special events. Just use the form on our “Join us” page. It says “2011,” but every membership lasts 12 months, no matter when you join.

Membership dues help us pay expenses like sound equipment, renting the dance hall, newspaper ads, and for the company that hosts this web site.

Members can also vote in elections each February, for new board members. And can serve on the board.

If you’re already a member, or if one of your friends or family “should” be a member but isn’t, may we recommend buying a gift membership?

If you love contra, you might also want to join CDSS, a national organization, of which ITMDG is an affiliate.

Board meeting & dancing

The board generally meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, at 6 p.m., at Earth House, and we always welcome dancers, musicians, & friends who want to know more about our work or contribute. On December 14, 2010, we’ll talk about alternative locations for GMB 2011, among other things.

The Cafe serves a small selection of soup, salad, sandwich, and coffee, tea, cocoa, etc. Free trade, organic, vegetarian, etc.

Fall Creek Delta Boys.

And then we dance! Ken Gall calls to Fall Creek Delta Boys, bringing big dance sound to a cold night.

Open Band

Open Band (12/7) means that anyone who wants to play for dancing is welcome up on the stage. Yes, a little experience with kazoo, fiddle, or other instrument is a major plus. But if you just wonder what they see when “they” look out over the hall, this is your chance to find out. Bob Duffy calls. Cool.

No experience is EVER needed on the dance floor.

GMB site burns

Sad news on Thanksgiving, as the site of Gypsy Moon Ball, the activity center at Belzer Boy Scout Camp, was destroyed by fire. News reports are that the hall was insured, and will be re-built. Sad as we are, fear not, the Indy Contra board is working on backup plans for GMB 2011, and in communication with the scouts about a good floor for dancing.

Special dance Thursday 11/18!

Contra dancers, join us for a special event on Thursday, 11/18 from 7 – 9 p.m. at Earth House. We expect a group of 20 or more new dancers, and experienced Indy Contra folks get free admission in exchange for helping them try it out!

Music is by Entwyned, and calling by Ken Gall.

New to contra?

Pointing out the direction during a "hey"
Dancers help each other by pointing during walk through

Please come for the introductory workshop held about 7:40 before the dancing begins, so we can walk you through the basic moves. (Feel free to come several times, and to come again after you’ve been dancing a while, to work on new skills, learn the “opposite” gender role, or to help newer people learn.) You will be part of a living tradition passed on by the experienced dancers helping the newcomers.

Ken the caller leads the dancers

Join in the very first dance of the evening with an experienced partner. Try to dance all of the first few dances, as they are usually the easier ones; and change partners each dance. Listen to the caller, and watch the other dancers, who will help by pointing, and gently helping you move in the right directions.

Dance with lots of different people, not just people you already know. Stick with one gender role for the first few months, even if you want to learn both eventually.

Relax. We were all new once, and most experienced dancers are glad to share something they love!

Classes, groups, and clubs are welcome too. Please give us a little advance notice if you can, so we can plan for a larger than usual number of beginners. If you prefer, we can arrange for a caller & helpers to come to your school, meeting, or event to give an introduction. Contact Ken at kenthecaller@indy.rr.com, or call (317) 488 – 7751.
