…come to our dance on Saturday, 1/22, at IUPUI, where we have a totally, completely FREE, no cost, and also totally, completely FUN!!! contra dance, with music by Iron Curtain Meltdown, and calling by our (Board Member & caller, volunteer excellante, ), Ken Gall. We hope for lots of new people, never danced before, who’ve seen fliers around campus or notices on the campus website, and lots of regular, longtime contra dancers who love to introduce one of their favorite past-times to new friends.

Snow? Thunder? Flooding?
In case of bad weather, we’re probably still dancing! Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor gloom of night. . . . But to be safe, if the Indianapolis Public Schools cancel their evening events, we’ll cancel too. Just check local radio, TV, and news web sites.

Snack Table contributions are welcome! (The Cafe at Earth House will be serving organic & fair trade & delicious coffees, teas, cocoa, & light meals/snacks at reasonable prices.) Cookies, cakes, cheese & crackers, carrots, cukes, & foods with names that don’t start with “C” are all appreciated!
Emily Ann Thompson & John Teskey

1/11/11, John Teskey’s calling to Emily Ann Thompson.

We’ve had noticeably more women than men the last few weeks, so this is a great time to come dance if you’re either a guy who wants to be in demand, or a gal who wants to try or practice “leading.”

Don’t forget, we enter Earth House on the east side of the building, not off East St.!
Thanks, Susan!
Thank you Susan Moffett, for calling our first dance of 2011 for us, due to John’s illness. We appreciate it!
first dance of 2011
For our first dance of 2011 (Tuesday, 1/4), John Teskey will call to the Coffee Zombies.
For those of you who resolved to exercise more or to lose weight, estimates (e.g., here) are that contra burns, for a 150 lb. person, about 300 pounds per hour.
special contra dance at IUPUI
Join Iron Curtain Meltdown, Ken Gall, and fellow dancers in a free outreach event introducing IUPUI students to contra dance.
We’ll dance 7 – 10 p.m. (yes, an extra hour of dancing, starting extra early) on Saturday, January 22, 2011, in Room 450C of the IUPUI Campus Center (420 University Blvd., between Michigan and Vermont Streets).
Parking at IUPUI is almost entirely not free (though the dance is!), see their maps & info. In Vermont Street Garage (building west of, and attached to, the Campus Center) parking will run about $4 – $6 for the evening. Meters (on Univ. Blvd.) run $0.75/hour. On this somewhat helpful map, the Campus Center is just South of the pink colored Hospital area (Red H’s) but appears not to be labeled. On this largely unhelpful map, the Center is & parking is yellow XB.
So, back to the fun part. This dance is an opportunity to introduce lots of new people to contra.
Regular dancers, please be ready to be helpful; dance with lots of new folks, and help them out by keeping it simple, showing them what to do, and being good role models!
Trip to Urbana
Indianapolis contra dancers have, weather permitting, a great dance opportunity on January 7 & 8, 2011. Urbana, Illinois has their annual “Jan Jam,” with contras, a impressive pot luck (seriously! this table stays loaded with food until late, late at night), and many hours of couples’ dancing, jamming (bring your instruments!), and even supervised fun for children! No dancing Sunday, but there’s a pot luck brunch. Carol Ormand & David Ernst are calling. Music’s by Mean Lids, Big Bluestem, and the Money Creek Boys. Plus there are about a dozen workshops by other folks, including our own Dianna Davis playing for a Zwiefacher session.
Urbana is just 2 hours west of Indianapolis, and on Central time. Schedule, travel info, etc. is at http://www.urbana-contra.org/jan_jam.html
Iron Curtain Meltdown & Barry Dupen
Iron Curtain plays a mix of French-Candian, swing, old-time, eastern European, and new and old tunes in a energetic, fun fusion style. Featuring fiddle, clarinet, accordion, guitar, viola, bass, and foot percussion – you can try to just sit still and listen, but it’s much more fun to dance!
