Yes, Indianapolis dancers, musicians, friends, families, and fans, we have two, TWO contra dances this week (both at our regular location). Tuesday’s dance features Celtic Myst and Jonathan Sivier, and on June 1st we have a First Friday contra with Dugan Murphy calling to Edge of Erin.
Indy Contra will have musicians busking outside, art galleries will be open, and we dance 8 – 11 p.m. (yes, an hour longer than usual, and don’t forget the 7:45 orientation if you’re bringing new folks!) then party at Chris & Juliet’s house.
Some Indy Contra dancers going to try & dance in the Pride Parade this year. It’s a bit of a challenge: it’ll be hot and lots of stop & go, but we’re up for it. Gather about 9:30 at the intersection of Mass Ave, St. Clair, and College Ave. Starting at 10 we walk to St. Clair in front of the Indianapolis Public Library. We’ll have music and fliers; you bring water and wear shoes you can dance (on pavement) in! Pretty sure we can get in some circles, stars, and a hey or two.
Indy Contra will dance at the Indiana State Fair on Tuesday, August 7th. 8 – 10 p.m. on the Dance for Health Stage. Band and caller tbd. Chances are that’s $2 admission day, and select fair foods on sale for $2. Come early! We’ll gather at the stage at 6 to go share deep fried products before dancing.
Dancers from other parts of the state are always invited!
May 22nd Doug & Fiona lead a workshop on flourishes, optional, additional things dancers can do in addition to the basics. 7:15. Then at 8 we contra to music by Emily Ann Thompson and calling by Doug Becker.
On June 12th we have a special visiting band & caller. Perpetual e-Motion, who you may remember from Gypsy Moon Ball 2010, is stopping by to play for us, with calling by Will Mentor.
They’ll play high energy traditional New England contra style music with electronic, rock, progressive influences, like they recently did in Concord, MA, at the Scout House (click “YouTube” to see 6 more videos from that night):
Edge of Erin (Samantha Stelting, Dianna Davis, and Robyn Ton) will play, Dugan Murphy will call, and we’ll dance from 8 – 11 p.m. at our regular site, Zion. Samantha Stelting has fallen in love with a flute player, gotten engaged, and is moving to Cleveland, OH. Dugan is returning to his native Maine.
Party after the dance at Chris & Juliet’s. Maps at the dance.
