special contra dance at IUPUI

Join Iron Curtain Meltdown, Ken Gall, and fellow dancers in a free outreach event introducing IUPUI students to contra dance.

We’ll dance 7 – 10 p.m. (yes, an extra hour of dancing, starting extra early) on Saturday, January 22, 2011, in Room 450C of the IUPUI Campus Center (420 University Blvd., between Michigan and Vermont Streets).

Parking at IUPUI is almost entirely not free (though the dance is!), see their maps & info. In Vermont Street Garage (building west of, and attached to, the Campus Center) parking will run about $4 – $6 for the evening. Meters (on Univ. Blvd.) run $0.75/hour. On this somewhat helpful map, the Campus Center is just South of the pink colored Hospital area (Red H’s) but appears not to be labeled.   On this largely unhelpful map, the Center is & parking is yellow XB.

So, back to the fun part. This dance is an opportunity to introduce lots of new people to contra.

Regular dancers, please be ready to be helpful; dance with lots of new folks, and help them out by keeping it simple, showing them what to do, and being good role models!

Trip to Urbana

Indianapolis contra dancers have, weather permitting, a great dance opportunity on January 7 & 8, 2011.  Urbana, Illinois has their annual “Jan Jam,” with contras, a impressive pot luck (seriously! this table stays loaded with food until late, late at night), and many hours of couples’ dancing, jamming (bring your instruments!), and even supervised fun for children! No dancing Sunday, but there’s a pot luck brunch. Carol Ormand & David Ernst are calling. Music’s by Mean Lids, Big Bluestem, and the Money Creek Boys. Plus there are about a dozen workshops by other folks, including our own Dianna Davis playing for a Zwiefacher session.

Urbana is just 2 hours west of Indianapolis, and on Central time.  Schedule, travel info, etc. is at http://www.urbana-contra.org/jan_jam.html

Become a member

We always welcome memberships, which cost $15, and save $1 off each weekly dance, plus other discounts on special events. Just use the form on our “Join us” page. It says “2011,” but every membership lasts 12 months, no matter when you join.

Membership dues help us pay expenses like sound equipment, renting the dance hall, newspaper ads, and for the company that hosts this web site.

Members can also vote in elections each February, for new board members. And can serve on the board.

If you’re already a member, or if one of your friends or family “should” be a member but isn’t, may we recommend buying a gift membership?

If you love contra, you might also want to join CDSS, a national organization, of which ITMDG is an affiliate.

Board meeting & dancing

The board generally meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, at 6 p.m., at Earth House, and we always welcome dancers, musicians, & friends who want to know more about our work or contribute. On December 14, 2010, we’ll talk about alternative locations for GMB 2011, among other things.

The Cafe serves a small selection of soup, salad, sandwich, and coffee, tea, cocoa, etc. Free trade, organic, vegetarian, etc.

Fall Creek Delta Boys.

And then we dance! Ken Gall calls to Fall Creek Delta Boys, bringing big dance sound to a cold night.

Open Band

Open Band (12/7) means that anyone who wants to play for dancing is welcome up on the stage. Yes, a little experience with kazoo, fiddle, or other instrument is a major plus. But if you just wonder what they see when “they” look out over the hall, this is your chance to find out. Bob Duffy calls. Cool.

No experience is EVER needed on the dance floor.
